Project Management is not just a skill; it’s a state of being

It is rare that any successful job is accomplished without project management. Whether it’s getting dinner on the table or getting ready to go on vacation, there is always a list of things to be done and typically a sequence in which to do them.  The trick is getting to the end result without running out of time and energy and without forgetting anything. Great turkey dinner but you left the cranberry sauce in the refrigerator!

 

When it comes to business projects, there’s even more at stake.  It’s not just a matter of time and energy, it’s also entails finding and coordinating the right resources, figuring out what can be done simultaneously, articulating the risks and agreeing on a contingency plan, keeping everyone updated with status and, typically most important of all, getting the whole job done within a pre-determined budget.

 

I have managed many such projects both large and small, and many at the same time.  Typically these have been software and marketing related (though the occasional turkey dinner was in there too!).  Not all of them were within the original timeframe, scope, and budget but where a deviation was necessary, I can say that everyone was aware of it well ahead of time and agreed to the chosen resolution.
